High-Pressure Rotary seals that are used for high-pressure applications have a solid cross-section, are developed to seal a pressurized lubricant, and possess hydrodynamic waves that encounter the pressurized lubricant. These fluid waves pump lubricant into the engaged sealing interface when the shaft spins.

A standard oil seal consists of an outer circular metal disk with an inner flexible rubber which is affixed to the metal during vulcanization. The bonded seal has no loose parts to allow leakage of oil or ingress of any contaminants. This kind of seal is more accurate, and can easily be fitted into a smaller space. An example is shown in Figure 2.9.

Operating temperatures for engine oil seals (see Fig. 14.11 and cross-section of lip seal with garter spring in Fig. 14.22) vary widely, depending on engine design and location within the engine. Typically, the rear crankshaft seal is subjected to much higher temperatures than the front seal. Oil sump temperatures vary considerably, depending on provisions for oil cooling.
